big read junior logoBecoming Naomi Leon

This year, the Big Read Junior features Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan. Eleven year old Naomi and her disabled brother, Owen, live with their tough, loving great-grandmother in a California trailer park. After seven years, their alcoholic mom and her slimy boyfriend return to take Naomi (not Owen) back for free babysitting and her welfare check. To avoid this fate, they search for their father in Mexico during Oaxaca's Christmas arts festival.
